Marketing Art

February 22, 2016

Three years ago I took my first marketing class online with Leslie Saeta.  I just checked and the challenge is still available.  Here is the link:   30 Marketing Ideas.  My own experiences are listed on old blog posts.  (There is a search button in right hand column of this blog which might have been one of the assignment of the 30 day challenge).

It really made a difference for  me in a lot of ways.  I use a lot of the ideas that Leslie suggested and it made me fearless about social media.  The best tip was to find a local retail place and ask if they would show your art.   Thank you, Heather Boutique, for showing and selling my art.   My latest discovery is INSTAGRAM.  Although it was a mystery to me at first I've been exploring it and trying to figure out how to use it.

This article explains how it can help artists.  Article about how to sell art on Instagram

It said to use it to tell a narrative about your art.  I'm still trying to figure out what that means, but will  discover that as I go.  My plan is to put a couple of photos on each day and see what happens.

I hope these links and ideas are helpful to you.  Please share your ideas about marketing in the comments.

Display Your Paintings in a Room Setting

February 6, 2016

Leslie Saeta displays her paintings so well in room settings and gave some ideas of how to do this on her blog.  Here is the link:  http://lesliesaetafineart.weebly.com/blog

I started doing this on facebook by just taking a photo of one hanging in my dining room.  As a result of this post,  I received some great ideas from facebook friends.  Thank you

Although I just blundered through this first one and it might have worked by accident, I will try to figure it out.  Below is the link to the APP.  I think you can even pull in your own room photos.  This is a good start.

Display your paintings in a room setting  (link to APP)

My example shows a painting which is really an 8x8 painting, but it in the room setting it looks gigantic.

I need to start painting bigger or find a way to display my small paintings in groups.

Business Part of Art

Marketing

I have had to accept that there has to be the ingredient of marketing in art, not a class that I took in college or anywhere so learning from the internet, blogs and the generosity of other artists has been my path.

30 Marketing Ideas in 30 Days by Leslie Saeta jump started me into learning about the subject.  I recently found this online class called ART Biz Blog and that was through the advice of another artist.  There is an assignment at the end of each short video.  I'll add the links in the next 6 blogs.

The first video talked about having a discipline of creating art.  The point was that you have to have a product to market.  The assignment was put up a sign with your studio hours and make the commitment to spend time creating art in your studio.    (pretty good hours....)

Learning to Paint -

November 3, 2013

SO MUCH TO LEARN - one of the things I like about painting, there's always more to learn.

I just invested in a three part DVD by Quang Ho.  I'll include a link to his site.  The first DVD is called "Nuts and Bolts" and is packed with so much outstanding instruction for a beginner, an intermediate or an advanced painter.   PUT THIS ON YOUR WISHLIST (link to Quang Ho's site)

Link to Pinterest board "Learn to Paint"

I've posted 10  of my own exercises/lessons from previous blogs  on pinterest.  The board on pinterest is called "Learn to Paint".  The lesson are out of order, but I numbered them so you can do them in order if you want.  Also listed are some recommended books and Quang Ho's DVD series.

(For some reason pinterest doesn't allow you to move pins around on a board and that is why they are out of order)

SALES and Marketing - more to learn

Just Sold - the color of this photo is off and that is why I am now using a better camera and spending more time on taking better photos.  You should start to see an improvement.

Marketing

August 18, 2013

The sale yesterday was a big success.  It is because I followed the advice of Leslie Saeta and her co-host Dottie Leatherwoods.  They do a radio show called ARTISTS HELPING ARTISTS.  The last show I listened to suggested having some kind of sale during the summer and to do some advertising.  This is exactly what I did.  In the last couple of blogs you read about the steps I went through.  I  prepared myself mentally that maybe no one would show up, but it turned out that we had quite a crowd and made a lot of sales.

I have concluded that marketing and business are definitely a part of being an artist.  Apparently a lot more people buy art online than in the past.  Social media and internet make it so much easier now.

I included the widget for Artist Helping Artist on the right side of this page.  You can select the shows that interest you from all the ones that have been done.  This weeks show was about "To Blog or Not to Blog".

Still the most important part of being an artist is to paint as often and as much as you can.  I got a little behind with the sale, but finished yesterday's painting of the donut and plan to start another today.

This is a reminder to myself when I realized that marketing could be full time job and you wouldn't have time to paint and something is wrong with that picture.
