Another painting for the Food Bank mini fundraiser.  I didn't put this one on the auction because the first two have no bids.  Maybe using the auction feature of Daily Paintworks doesn't work for me.  I did post it on my Gallery page.

JUST SOLD - thank you

The monthly(September) give-away painting is one of a pear done with a palette knife.  I haven't taken a photo yet, but will post it tomorrow.  Just send me an email (cbjmail@cox.net) or message me on facebook to enter.

I'll have Ziva do the drawing on October 1.

This is Ziva.  She is very talented.

Ways to Improve your Paintings

September 25, 2013

Paint the same thing more than once

It's not something I do all the time, but every time I try it, I think why don't I do this more often.

Which one did I do first?     Which one do you like better?

(I made it easy to leave comments because I removed that crazy robot letter-thing under comment moderation-it's easy to do and you can still read comments before they are published).

I toned one with a really light color and the other was dark.

Both 6 x 6

Today I put one on Daily Paintworks of some cups with a little pitcher and a couple days before I did one using the same cups, but with a sugar bowl.  I'm going to do one more with those cups because I made the sugar bowl so big it might overpower the cups so I'll try another one with a smaller sugar bowl.  The title will be "Sugar Daddy".  I just love that title.  On facebook I already renamed the first one "Sugar Daddy".  (Remember that post a few days ago about titles.  I'm trying to do better with that.)

I can't think of anything too interesting for these titles.  Ideas?

How to keep paint brushes clean

I have ruined so many brushes.  I now take very good care of them and have a very regimented routine.

You can probably tell these are badly cared for brushes.  You can see where I went wrong.  The bad part is, its like painting with a boom.  You really need a nice edge to make a brush work for you.  However, I never throw them out because you never know when you might need one for something.
By the way these were not cheapo brushes.  It's brands that I really like, Silver and, I can't read the label on the top one because the handle is so covered with paint.  I confess in the past to leaving them with gunked on paint overnight.
I've had these awhile and, so far, they are like new.  They keep a nice edge and you can use even  big brushes for tiny things, because the corners are good, as well as the edges.  These are Silver Brand and Monarch, terrific brushes.

My routine:

1.  Pull of excess paint by swiping across sock.
(If you read a recent blog about how I attach an old sock top to my palette, you will know what I mean)
2. Then I dip the brush into the odorless mineral spirits, next use a paper towel to remove even more excess paint.

3.  Use soap and water (I use Ivory Soap because it is white and you can see the paint coming off the brush).  Use a circular rubbing motion until there is no more color coming off the brush.  Use your fingers to squeeze the soap and water and maybe paint, from the brush ferrule to the edge of the brush.  (Now I wish I knew how to put a video on my blog)

4.  Dry the handles, then put on a flat surface to dry.

What I like about this routine is that you have nice clean professional looking brushes when you start to paint the next day.  It feels good.

Finished Painting 2May 20, 2013

On yesterday's blog post I showed the almost finished painting.  Today I made one major change and a few tiny ones.  It hit me right away that the background was too warm and came forward too much so I cooled and lightened the background, making it darker on the left.  Now I feel it is finished and will post it on my website.

Painting from yesterday, March 21

I'm getting behind on blog entries.  This painting was done yesterday from tea cups that my mother gave me long ago.  I never use them, but can't part with them so this is a good use for them.  My mother would like the idea that they are in a painting.

Painting for March 14, 2013

I am still working on turnips.  I like these colors together.  I would like to do another, but the turnips have reached the end of the line.

a balanced diet

20in x 11 in

I really like painting donuts for a lot of reasons.  In the past week I've eaten more donuts than in the last twenty years.  It is an endless subject and great reason to buy them.  I said the one with pink frosting was my last one, but maybe not.  The fourth one up is the one I was waiting for because it was filled with something white and fluffy.  I froze them in between painting times, but that one  was still good.  My husband will eat the rest of them.  (It took a lot to balance them,  they fell over a few times.)

Painting for March 7, 2013

This is my study for  a big painting.  I'm undecided about the background color.  Having all these donuts around has been torture.  I might have to buy more so there is variety.  Pink with sprinkles will be the next layer.  Will they last until the painting is finished?

Painting for March 6, 2013

6 x 6

As soon as this dozen is gone and I have finished the big painting of donuts,  I am going to have to find a subject with fewer calories.

We bought a dozen donuts today.  The only one I had to eat was the peanut one because it would have been  too hard to paint.

Painting a Day (from one day last week)

I worked on a big painting today.  My last post shows the big painting, but mainly I wanted to show a photo of the shadow box that my husband made for me.  I am very lucky to have such a nice husband.

Painting a Day

I tried to put each lemon at a different angle.  Painting yellow is always a challenge.  My plan is to do a big painting from this, probably 18 x 36.  I'm not sure if it look right bigger than life

Oil on board
These are frames that I just ordered from FRANKEN FRAMES.  I am very happy with them.  They are sort of modern looking and work well with the flat panels that I use for the 6 x 6 paintings a day.
I was also pleased with the great communication they provided and the prompt service.

Painting a Day - March 2, 2013

I started this one yesterday and finished it today.  I guess it doesn't qualify for "Painting a Day"

This is the first time I have painted a donut. What a great excuse to buy donuts.  Next time, a jelly donut.....

Painting a day, February 25, 2013

My photos are looking so washed out.  I need an intervention for my photo taking skills.  My husband is going to help me with this.  Look for this post again.  Plus I have discovered a new source of frames call Franken Frames. Tomorrow I will post a photo of the new frames I plan to use for the 6 x 6 sizes.  They are black and sort of contemporary looking.  The service from Franken Frames is outstanding and prompt.  The frames were very well packed and arrived in perfect condition.

Painting for Today, February 24, 2013

Yesterday I made a trip to the thrift store.  Here are two of my purchases.  I used construction paper for the flat surfaces which was suggested by Carol Marine in one of her ArtBytes on the Daily Painters website.
