Demo for painting
First, I toned the canvas using Rembrandt's Transparent Red Medium. The reason I use it is because it makes the final painting more luminous when it peeks through here and there. I started by measuring the distance between the eyes, then using that increment to place nose and top and bottom of the head. I started with the darks. (Before even starting the painting, I did a couple of drawings and a study with oils)
Then I started adding the white and grays, trying to include temperature difference to make it more interesting.
Finished up by adding details, lightening the ears, and adding the color. I never met the dog in person, but the owner said the fur was black even though the photo looks more brown and white.
Absolutely wonderful portrait and tribute. Great job. After I send this comment, I'll let you know if your "prove you're not a robot thingy" is pulled off. Thanks for visiting my blog and being inspired to turn it off! I enjoy commenting on blogs so much more when I don't have to type those extra letters in!
ReplyDeleteNope, it is still asking for the proof...

ReplyDeleteI tried it again. Thank you for helping me with this.
ReplyDeleteIt Worked!
ReplyDeleteAnd you are very welcome. Thanks for getting rid of it! I hope to see you again soon.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed seeing your process. Thanks for sharing. Rembrandt's Transparent Red Medium is a favorite color of mine. You captured a wonderful expression in his face... great job!
ReplyDeleteHe is truely precious. What a face! Beautiful rendering and as a non-oil painting artist I found the progressions very helpful.
